Anyone know wine-speak?
Feb 13 2008, 2:37 PM EST I've been researching wine-tasting terms and have found numerous inconsistencies between one "expert" and the next. I've written an article trying to make sense of it all and would be grateful for feedback from anyone with knowledge of this mysterious dialect. Please have a look: http://www.mahalo.com/How_to_Talk_About_Wine Any comments are appreciated!! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Feb 15 2008, 4:18 PM EST I enjoy reading your article being someone who is trying to become more educated about wine myself. I watched an entertaining video by John Cleese - Wine For the Confused. If you've not seen it, it's rather entertaining and learned some interesting facts. Great article, thanks for sharing! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Anyone know wine-speak?
Feb 29 2008, 4:14 PM EST You have written a few nice article for the beginning wine afficianado. It may interest you to know that the American Wine Society as well as others have developed a wine aroma guide done as wheel which is very helpful to those new to wine. The aromas are segmented into categories and are helpful in putting a name to those elusive scents you know but can't place. There is a wheel for both still wine and one for sparkling wines available on their web site. Also, please note, corked - as a wine term- is absolutely not from rotted cork. The term is applied to wines which have been contaminated with TCA (trichloroanisole) which is a contaminant that can be in the cork, barrel, cooperage or even in the wood in the cellar. This is not a health risk, but even an amount as small as 5 ppm can ruin a wine and is detectable by most consumers. The wine industry loses about 20% of bottles to this contamination and it is very difficult to destroy if in fact it is in a cellar. Many think that screw caps will solve this problem and it well should, however, the issue with screw caps is that the wines then can oxidize and cause yet another unpleasant flavor. Enjoy your reseach- but more- enjoy every glass of wine you try! Do you find this valuable? |
