Restaurants

DEEP
NW Wall Street

Chef Jody Denton's second Bend restaurant offers Japanese - fusion themed menu with small plates format and very creative offerings in addition to sushi. Try the laquered pork ribs, oven roasted eggplant, pureed Japanese sweet potatoes, Peking styled duck, Green Dragon roll, vegetable tempura...the list goes on. Everything is is expertly prepared and served temperature perfect. Extensive wine list and good mixologist behind the bar. Small space; ask for a table downstairs for best ambiance. Can be very loud as evening progresses. Servers are well informed about menu items, entusiastic and helpful. Management is obviously paying attention to the details. On street parking can be tough at times but city lot nearby. Restaurant is accessible to people with disabilities.

CORK
150 NW Oregon Ave

541-382-6881

Great food, excellent service and a very good wine list. Probably one of the first "serious food" restaurants in Bend, it was just remodeled to "bring the space into the 21st Century" per resturant PR. A reservation might be that the menu doesn't change often enough but some standbys are tempting to order again and again. Noodle salad with duck, pancetta wrapped prawns seared diver scallops or braised lamb shanks are among many great choices. Dinner only. On street parking can be difficult, but city garage a few blocks away. Accessible to people with disabilities, but the bathroom is outside in a corridor which make access tough for people using wheelchairs.

MERENDA RESTAURANT & WINE BAR
900 NW Wall Street

541-330-2304

Chef Jody Denton's first restaurant in Bend set the standard for others. A frequently changing menu offering top notch options from small plates to soups to salads to pastas to entrees capitalizing on fresh produce and products and leveraging the kitchen's open spit and grill for specials. Almost unarguably the best wine list in Central Oregon with an incredible number of by the glass options, the wine steward here knows his stuff. Very good bar with creative cocktails made from fresh juices. Happy hour offers some of the more popular small plates and house made pizzas at discounted prices. Can be unbearably noisy at peak hours. Open for lunch too. Accessible to people with disabilities. On street parking can be tough at times, but city garage a few blocks away.

BALTAZAR'S

Arguably the best Mexican restaurant in a town tht has a surfeit of Mexican restaurants, this is not a "beef burrito and beans" kind of place. Instead look for options like house made mole sauces, spinach filled tamales with mushroom sauce and lobster enchiladas. The location is a tad off the beaten path, small and quiet. The owner got into a spat with a local mother over his preference not to have small children dine there with harsh language and news articles covering the dispute over a high chair in mid 2007 have had a negative impact on business. Food and service are both very good. Lunch and dinner. Parking in associated lot. Accessible to people with disabilities.

ALPENGLOW CAFE

1333 NW Wall

Bend has a lot of options for great breakfast and Alpenglow runs with the best of them. They advertise everything is fresh and they'll pay any customer who can find a can opener in the kitchen! Eggs Benedict are hard to beat except maybe by the Cascading Grains pancakes served with real maple syrup. Open for lunch too. Parking is on street below building or around corner in building lot, both can be full at times .

Off the beaten path but worth the search. Great artisan breads and wonderful baked goods like apricot scones, coconut macaroons, and cinammon hives. Bagels can't be beat. Wonderful sandwiches and homemade soup at lunch with limited seating. Difficult access for people in wheelchairs.
